POSITION SUMMARY

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is the primary medical contact for external scientific leaders (ESLs) and other relevant customers within the assigned geographic region. S/he is also a leader in understanding and communicating the science underlying her/his assigned Zogenix product and the related therapeutic area(s). The MSL is responsible for developing trusted, collaborative, peer-to-peer relationships with top regional and local ESLs. S/he helps inform Zogenix medical strategies and tactics through identifying insights through engagement with ESLs and other customers.

The MSL may lead/support other Medical Affairs projects as needed. S/he may also support clinical development activities as needed.

MAJOR AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

  • Develop and manage trusted, collaborative, professional, peer-to-peer working relationships with ESLs, Clinical Investigators, and regional professional societies/patient advocacy groups
  • Develop annual ESL engagement plan that defines strategy for managing ongoing relationships and identifying and building new relationships
  • Develop thorough understanding of the pre-clinical, clinical, and other research/data that supports the safe and effective use of the assigned Zogenix product; keep up-to-date with new research/data as it is released
  • Provide clinical product presentations to US payor accounts as needed
  • Contribute meaningful insights to medical strategies and tactics
  • Support clinical development with site identification, site initiation visits, and/or other activities as needed
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with commercial colleagues to ensure optimal ESL engagement and patient care in a compliant fashion
  • Contribute to Zogenix global Medical Affairs vision through meaningful participation in global projects

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • Terminal science degree (e.g., MD, PhD, PharmD, NP) required
  • Minimum of 1-year experience as a field-based Medical Science Liaison for a pharmaceutical/biotech company
  • Proven ability to establish trusting and collaborative relationships with experts in clinical and academic settings
  • Strong presence and ability to communicate in order to represent Zogenix and the assigned product with ESLs
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • Ability to be a team player and work collaboratively within Medical Affairs and cross-functionally within an organization
  • Ability to organize and manage scientific leadership activities such as advisory boards
  • Knowledge of compliance and ethical standards
  • Experience working with payor customers preferred
  • Experience in neurology and rare disease areas preferred

SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • In-depth knowledge of relevant therapeutic area
  • Ability to understand and clearly explain pharmaceutical clinical trials
  • Superior oral presentation skills/written communication skills, including presentations to external and internal customers
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills
  • Ability to work self-directed and independently
  • Self-awareness to seek guidance from manager or others when needed
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a strong sense of collaboration
  • Detailed understanding of regulatory and professional guidelines associated with the dissemination of medical information (OIG, FDA, AMA, ACCME, and PhRMA guidelines)
  • Possession of basic business acumen, business planning, and project management skills to facilitate implementation and execution of personal, departmental, regional and company objectives
  • Ability to formulate, initiate, lead, and delegate tasks to achieve target objectives
  • Must understand and respect company core values and possess the highest integrity

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Willingness and ability to travel within the US up to 70%
